PROJECT ROW HOUSES

Of all my activities for fall 2011, the one I am most excited about is Project Row Houses, located here at my home base in Third Ward, Houston Texas.  The Project Row Houses event taking place in Third Ward features art installations and events scheduled from October, 2011 through March, 2012. As this project unfolds and culminates, I will be working on extending the scope and impact of the exhibit by taking this installation on the road and turning it into a global project. To begin this process, I intend to embark on an East Coast tour to display my doors and spread my message of recycling and environmental awareness.  The pictures above are of me doing an installation in row house 2507.  Be sure to come by and view my "What's in a Door?" exhibit at Project Row Houses.  Detailed info is below:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROSALYN AND CHARLES!

October is my birthday month.   So, Brenda arranged for me and her friend Rosalyn to share the limelight in a birthday celebration as part of the Arts of Fine Wine at Winetopia this month.  Rosalyn and I got together and put together a fabulous party with live entertainment, DJ, lots of food, fun, dancing, fine wine, champagne and art.  It was awesome!  Check out the pictures and be sure to attend the next Arts of Fine Wine event at Winetopia.

WHAT HAPPENED IN SEPTEMBER?

September went by so fast!  It was a whirlwind month with lots of exciting art activities.  However, the most interesting event was the Gulf Coast Film Festival.  My interview entitled, "What's in a Door?", made for the Dominion Films show, Getting the Edge, was chosen as a finalist in the film festival.

Throughout the weekend finalist films were shown at various locations in the Gulf Coast area.  During the airing of "What's in a Door?"  I was on hand with Producer/Director Abiiba Howell to answer questions and share information about the What's in a Door project.  The weekend event also featured a banquet with awards and presentations.  For that part of the event, I wore my red carpet jacket and got signatures from many of the distinguished guests present.

In addition, I got to meet actress Marsha Mason who was the major honoree for the year.  My film didn't win but it got a lot of notice and generated lots of interest in the What's in a Door project.  You can find out more about "What's in a Door?" by visiting my current and upcoming events at Project Row Houses and the Houston Museum of African American Culture.  Look for more information to be posted in my next blog posts.

UNVEIL YOUR ART PIECES WITH FLAIR

When you buy, classic, original pieces of art, the most exciting part is showing it off to your friends and family.  That's exactly what Brenda did when she invited everyone to the unveiling of her art pieces at her home.  During the event, she also gave her friends and family a rare opportunity to meet and greet the artist.  Her party turned out to be a grand, elegant event complete with a violinist, wine, hor devours, and brilliant conversations.  Her chairs pictured below in an earlier post were unveiled to her friends along with a beautiful house warming gift from the artist.  In addition, all of Brenda's guests received their very own art pieces to commemorate the event.  When are you going to unveil your special Charles Washington art pieces to your friends and family?

WELCOME TO MY BLOG

I started blogging a few months ago and I wrote a couple of articles to get started.  I was so excited to have a new 'door' of opportunity to connect with art lovers that I jumped right into writing about things that were going on in my world without giving my readers a proper welcome message.  So, this message is to let you know that you are welcome to enter the 'door' to my world.  Here, you will be able to see what's new in my studio, what I'm doing around town, and when I'll be presenting new exhibits and shows nearby, or hosting events in other cities.  Sign up to follow my blog and invite your art lover friends to check it out as well.  Anyone following my blog will be able to receive exclusive event invitations and complementary gifts from time to time.  You can find out more about me by visiting my website here.  Also, you are welcome to share your your thoughts.  I would love to hear your news or comments about my art and events.

AT HOME WITH FINE ART

The magnificent art piece, in the picture above, now resides in the home of distinguished art collectors.  This distinguished couple was introduced to me, at the International Art Festival in Houston, by one of their closest friends who was also a collector of my art.  The couple came by my kiosk three times to admire the piece.  They were so overwhelmed by the art door that they had to purchase it and make it their own.  Their placement of the piece in their home is a testament to their excellent taste.  I am so happy that my art is treasured by so many wonderful people and that it brings them so much excitement and pleasure.

FUNCTIONAL ART INSTALLATION

Today I had the opportunity to deliver two chairs purchased by one of my distinguished collectors.  I delivered the chairs to her home, signed them, and helped her decide on the correct placement of the chairs in her home.  It was an amazing opportunity for me to collaborate with an art collector to make a positive statement that represents the vibration of the art piece as it coordinates with its new surroundings.  The art installed today was a pair of functional art chairs, designed to be sculpture, as well as, seating that can blend with any decor.  The set of hand painted chairs make a statement through their colorful design, contemporary style and regal display.  The numbered chairs have been installed on personalized, platform bases that add to the regal ambiance of the pieces.  Check it out in the pictures above.  One of a kind works of art like this would be great in your home also.

PREPARATIONS FOR OUR GRAND OPENING

February 22, 2011

We have a big project ahead of us.  We’re currently in the process of remodeling our new compound that will house Charles Washington’s art gallery, and will be the headquarters of the ABC Art Coalition.   Right now, the building needs a lot of work.  But we’re hopeful that we will be able to have everything ready for our March 25th grand opening.  Needless to say, we would love to have some volunteers come and help us clean up and prepare for the big day.  So feel free to send us a note if you’re interested in taking part in our beautification process.  We will be posting photos of the building soon, and will be including frequent updates of the progress.  So be sure to be on the lookout for our first photo update of the building.  Most importantly, mark your calendars for our grand opening event, on March 25th, which will feature a showcase of Washington’s “What’s In a Door” series.  We’ll provide you with more details about the event at a later date.

THE ARTS OF FINE WINE…AND LOVE

February 10, 2011

Love, arts, and wine were the perfect combination as locals gathered at Winetopia to enjoy The Arts of Fine Wine, an event hosted by Environmental Artist, Charles Washington.  Washington debuted his new series, “Touch My Heart,” at the event, in light of Valentine’s Day.  It included Valentine’s Day cards, wine glasses, wine boxes, and pins, as well as Valentine gift bags that were sold out in about an hour. Throughout the evening, the crowd was serenaded by Jazz band, Smalls and Friends. Other vendors like Addictive Jewelz by J. Shanel, and Cookie Lee, to name a few, also featured their artistic talents at the event.  Washington addressed the crowd toward the end of the night and thanked them for coming.  Then he set the mood by introducing spoken work poet, The Fluent One.  The crowd fell silent, lending a listening ear to his poem “Prince Charming.”  Guests sipped on wine and enjoyed Washington’s artwork displayed on the walls of the wine bar, as they mingled with the artist.  The Arts of Fine Wine is a regular event held by Washington at Winetopia, in the Briargrove neighborhood.  Keep your eyes open for future posts to get information on future events.
